Founder & Executive Director
David Gant started performing in theater and musical productions at an early age and began dancing at age 15. He received the bulk of his dance training with the Georgia Youth Ballet under the direction of Magdalena Maury, dancing soloist and principal roles in a range of classical and contemporary ballets and working with master teachers including Magda Auñon, Laura Alonso, Finis Jhung, Elie Lazar, and Valdimir Issaev. David also received scholarships to summer programs at Ballet Austin, the RDA Craft of Choreography Conference, Burklyn Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet. After completing his training, he went on to dance as a member of the Alabama Ballet, Dance Ad Deum, and as a guest artist with Ballet Memphis, Ballet Magnificat, Greensboro Ballet, and number of companies throughout the Southeastern US. David also was on faculty at the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education.
David co-founded Refuge Dance Company in 2006 and was blessed to perform with the company until retiring from the stage in 2014. While with Refuge as a performer, David had the privilege to work with too many wonderful choreographers and dancers to even list. He also served as Stage Manager for Project Dance New York and Project Dance Atlanta from 2007-2011.
Since retiring from performing, he has taken on an increased role in the operations side of Refuge. David is responsible for the business and technical side of both Refuge Dance Company and Refuge Dance Academy as well as teaching as many classes as he can.
In addition to helping his wife Katherine lead Refuge, David recently completed a career in management with several prominent Atlanta companies, and is beginning a new career as both a furniture-maker and business consultant. But his favorite “job” of all is being a dad/granddad to their five children and one grandson.
